Takeaway from our Correspondent Banking rising talent
The Sibos 2023 topics that left the deepest impression on me were Generative AI, ISO 20022, Cloud, Standardisation, and ESG. From the many insightful panels led by industry experts across the world, my takeaway is that these areas will remain top of mind for our industry in the near future and definitely something for us to stay constantly updated on.
STAR Scholar Reflections Christine Mungla, Correspondent Banking Principal, Kenya and East Africa
Sibos returned to Toronto, Canada after six years. The packed conference program was buzzing with activity, bringing together more than 9,000 members of the financial community from across the globe.I have been reflecting on my wonderful experience at the conference. This was my first opportunity to attend Sibos, as part of the Standard Chartered Sibos Delegates team and as a STAR Scholar. The STAR Programme focusses on empowering future leaders. This special programme brings together women in finance, and this year 32 amazing women participated from various international financial institutions with diverse backgrounds.
It was humbling to discover that women around the globe share similar challenges at the workplace. We learned from each other, attended client events and industry sessions, and networked over lunches and cocktail events. We also benefitted from mentoring sessions with senior female leaders drawn from the financial industry, who shared their professional journeys and encouraged us on how to overcome our limitations. My golden moments at the STAR programme were these morning mentorship sessions. My key takeaway – which was consistent across most speakers – is the importance of building your tribe. As women aspiring to leadership positions, we need to find and connect with people who share similar mindsets as we build skill sets for the roles that we want to occupy in the future. A tribe should integrate open and supportive people who share similar mindsets regardless of gender, creating diversity and inclusivity. Building your tribe is everything!
It was also intriguing to learn that Swift’s activities around diversity and inclusion closely align with Standard Chartered where the drive is to give every staff member equal opportunity. With this kind of collaboration, Swift and Standard Chartered alike are looking to bring together the financial community to ensure that everyone receives the opportunity to express their skills and maximise their potential within their organisations.
Finally, I will certainly stay connected with my newly formed relationships. Do I think that Standard Chartered should continue to support this programme? Absolutely! A financial institutions banker should experience Sibos coupled with the STAR Scholar Programme at least once in a career lifetime. It is an indescribable experience!
I am now part of the STAR Scholar Alumni Programme and look forward to playing my part by mentoring new STAR scholars when called upon by Swift and internally mentoring other young women within Standard Chartered. I am very grateful to Swift for such a phenomenal programme and to Standard Chartered for the opportunity to be its STAR scholar for the year 2023.
